About
Hilton Head Island: Providing Fun, Sun, and Activities Galore!
|
Hilton
Head Island, South Carolina, conveniently located along
the south Atlantic coast, combines breathtaking natural beauty,
world-class golf, outstanding sport fishing, championship
tennis, and quality shopping on a barrier island just 12 miles
long and five miles wide. This island is widely considered
to be one of the finest resort communities in the United States,
welcoming over one and a half million visitors each year.
Vacationer's flock to the area for the gorgeous scenery, the
myriad of outdoor activities, or just to lounge about in the
"Treasured Coast's" sun.
In 1663,
the Island was visited by William Hilton, an English sea captain,
sailing from Barbados in search of tropical lands on which
to establish profitable English plantations. Hilton then claimed
it for the British crown, establishing the legacy with his
own name, "Hilton's Headland".

Hilton
Head Island as we know it today experienced a rebirth during
the 1950's due to a man named Charles Fraser. He had inspiration
to create an unprecedented resort community which would encompass
uncommon beauty and spirit while preserving the land's inherent
natural endowments. With precise preparation, Fraser developed
Sea Pines, the first planned Island community. Since then,
his same environmentally sound covenants have become effective
guidelines for all subsequent development.

With
over 20 courses in the area, Hilton Head is a golf lover's dream
come true. Four of the courses, Harbour Town, Colleton
River, Haig Point and Long Cove have each
been named by Golf Digest as being in the top 100 courses
in the United States. Architects of the courses on Hilton Head
read like a who's who in golfing history. Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus,
Arthur Hills, Arnold Palmer, Tom Fazio, Rees Jones, Gary Player,
and Robert Trent Jones have all put their seal of approval on
Hilton Head Island's golf courses. The courses on Hilton Head
offer challenges for both the serious golfer and the "weekend
warrior". |
| Tennis
players can hit with pros, play "pick up" matches,
or practice their strokes at one of Hilton Head's 360 tennis
courts. In fact, four of the tennis clubs have been named to
Tennis Magazine's top 50 U.S. Clubs: Palmetto Dunes
Tennis Center, Port Royal Racquet Club, Sea Pines
Racquet Club, and the Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club.
The island has courts that represent all three of the major
playing surfaces, grass, clay, and hard courts. Instruction
is offered at almost all of the clubs if you want to take a
lesson. Don't be surprised if you spot some famous faces on
the courts. Martina Navratilova, Billy Jean King, Jennifer Capriati,
and Jimmy Connors are all frequent visitors to the tennis scene
on Hilton Head Island. |

Hilton
Head Island is surrounded by water on all sides, with a network
of rivers and creeks crisscrossing through the center of this
boot-shaped island. As a result of its aquatic nature, one
of the best ways to experience Hilton Head Island is by boat.
Fortunately, Hilton Head Island is home to a number of full-service
marinas which welcome boaters and sailors throughout the year.
Waverunners, powerboat rentals, sailboats, and other water
craft are available. Most of the local marinas also offer
inshore and offshore charter fishing expeditions, as well
as dolphin tours, sunset cruises and other amenities. Some
even offer kayaking instruction or sailboat lessons, depending
upon your preference.

|
| For cyclists,
one of the best things to do on Hilton Head Island is to rent
a bicycle and travel along the paved bike paths that line the
island. Amble past creeks, lagoons and rivers as you glimpse
the Lowcountry's unforgettable foliage. Don't miss the opportunity
to ride a bike down the flat, smooth beach at low tide, one
of the special joys of Hilton Head Island. |

Of
course, if total inactivity is more your style, with 12 miles
of gorgeous shoreline, Hilton Head is a beach lover's paradise.
Take some time and lounge in the sun. Or walk along the beach
at sunset for a gorgeous view of the Atlantic. You can even
rent a boogie board or other equipment that will get you out
in the surf. One popular rental location is off the traffic
circle on Pope Avenue where there is a pavilion, and
a shopping and dining plaza. Other beaches like Folly Field
Beach, Driessen Beach, and Bradley Beach are
conveniently located mid-Island, but don't have as many rental
options.
Hilton Head offers vacation possibilities for every visitor.
If you want to lounge in the sun, Hilton Head Island will provide.
If you want to play golf, tennis, or fish the waters of the
Atlantic, Hilton Head Island will provide. Whatever your particular
idea of fun is, Hilton Head Island will provide! |
